Review : TVB Series - Wax and Wane

Disclaimer : All pictures and video is from TVB.

In my opinion, this series is pretty good. I’ve always had an affinity for family drama when it comes to TVB series. Don’t worry, I won’t rewrite the entire story again as you can find plenty of them when you google the title. Neither am I gonna copy and paste the synopsis, you can read them yourself in their official site.

The Cast:
In general, the casting was fantastically done. Here are some of the characters which I picked out that is worth mentioning:

Roger Kwok Chun On (Yung Yi Chun) plays a remarkable character and he fits the role very well. I particularly liked how he was initially being assumed as a ruthless entrepreneur who doesn't care about family values; but in actual fact, whatever that he does was for the family. Previously, since Roger Kwok often plays main supporting roles, I reckon that this series is a breath of fresh air to actually see him in the lead role. And he did an amazing job!

Ron Ng Cheuk Hei (Yung Yi Hang) character was so-so. Personally, I like Ron Ng because he is very gaya. I feel that Yi Hang’s character is a very stereotypical “rich-man’s son” role – lack of business knowledge, spends the family fortune, and only immerse himself in love/relationships. His reaction and facial expression was pretty much the same throughout the episodes though. So, I guess overall his performance pale in comparison with Roger Kwok.

Sunny Chan Kam Hung (Man Ka Fung) character is a tad too loud for my liking. There are just too much of shouting and rash action which I feel is very much overboard. Yes, I know that the character requires Sunny Chan to be rough because he is uneducated. But there is just way too much of shouting it gets very irritating. However, I like the twist whereby he was too infatuated with money that he eventually turned to be like the old Yi Chun. Just felt that the shouting should be toned down.

Kate Tsui Tze San (Man Ka Fu aka “Fu Kwai Mui”) character was also rather nicely played. For a change, Kate Tsui was the nice and smart “girl-next-door” as oppose to her usual characters of being a bitchy villain. Still think that she plays a better villain though. She is improving as an actress as she is relatively new so I shall cut her some slack. Her performance was okay despite not being stellar. Oh.. and she is pretty too.

Toby Leung Jing Kei (Ho Ka Mun aka “Tai Sek Mui”) fits very very well into the character. Got to admit though, initially like Sunny Chan, she was very irritating as she shouts a lot and her glutton-like character really irks me off. But as the series goes along, it became more “bearable” as she becomes more ladylike.

Excerpts worth mentioning :
(may contain spoiler)

I like the twist towards the middle of the series where Yi Chun realized that there is more towards the business and in the end family ties are the most important.

The twist where Tai Sek Mui was actually a half-sister of the Yung family because Yi Chun’s father has strings of affairs outside of marriage and fathered her with his own cousin sister.

Fu Kwai Mui who always encourages Yi Chun by writing messages on post-it notes (which is kind of cute). These gestures eventually led to Yi Chun falling for her although she is already attached to his brother, Yi Hang.

The scenes where Yi Chun cried for his family – at his mother’s grave when he couldn't make it back in time for the wake, and at his father’s bedside when the latter had a stroke. All scenes made me cry together with him too. I like these scenes as it gives off certain moral values.

The climax where Man Ka Fung plotted and managed to kick Yi Chun out of the company, and places Yi Hang as the CEO. This is where Yi Chun lost everything – business and family as he was being suspected of having affairs with both Man Ka Fung’s wife and Fu Kwai Mui.

The Ending:
(may contain spoiler)

Honestly, it is too abrupt for my liking. As with most TVB series, the ending is usually rushed and sucky. This is no different and this is why I think so:

I think Zita’s character is irrelevant and Yi Chun should end up with Fu Kwai Mui because both the later and Yi Hang don’t have jodoh as mentioned time and again in the series (judging from the fact that they didn't get to marry even after trying to for numerous times)

The part where both Man Ka Fung’s wife and Fu Kwai Mui got pregnant at almost the same time was a little too far-fetched.

Yi Chun’s father’s mistress, Wong Sau Peng died too abruptly resulting in her lover going mental. Wonder why TVB like to “kill” its villains in this abrupt manner.

Conclusion:
All in all, it was a good movie. Really worth watching. :) And I shall end my post with the theme song. Totally love the song! :)
